Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking |
With the Penguin reprint cover, which I find better than the original. It's talks about using our inborn ability called "Thin-slicing" or our ability to gauge what is really important from a very narrow period of experience. We use it most of the time but we are unaware of it. The book explains how important and relevant snap decision making is as opposed to months or years of research. Basically, it means too much information can lead to wrong decisions because you stray too far from the main points.
As Gladwell says "This book is all about those moments when we 'know' something without knowing why". It shares amazing studies and experiences like how one Marriage Analyst can decipher in a 15 minute conversation between a newly married couple; with 95% accuracy, whether they would stay together or not. Another is a fireman who thought he had ESP but it was just his subconscious synthesizing his expertise with the situation in a second telling him and his crew to get out of the burning kitchen.
Instincts, Subliminal priming.. etc all in this book. Though I haven't finished it yet I'd give it a 5/5 for informing about these possibilities.

Zs - New Slaves (The Social Registry, May 2010) |
A Brooklyn based band which incorporates... well. It seems like random thrashing at first but it's actually composed hypnotically liked that. I like how I don't have to think about what's going on with it and just play it because it is what it is. Currently on the 20 minute title track that sounds like a very eclectic traffic jam.
The title of the track "Acres of Skin" also has an interesting back story.
quoted from villagevoice.com:
What is the title "Acres Of Skin" about?
"Acres of skin" is a quote from the dermatologist Dr. Robert M. Kligman who conducted tests on prisoners in the Holmesburg prison in Pennsylvania. He was conducting experiments, which proved to be quite dangerous and permanently detrimental to his subjects. Later, when describing the environment he'd chosen for these experiments, he said something to the effect of "I walked into the prison and all I saw were acres of skin."
